What You Need to Know About Family Areas in United Kingdom Malls

When we initially reached United Kingdom, the concept of a “family section” seemed strange. After several years and numerous trips to malls, it turned out to be one of the simplest ways to shop and dine with children. Here’s what we discovered.

What Even Is a Family Section?

In United Kingdom malls, family sections are designated zones — occasionally whole levels, at other times specific areas — where families (typically including women and kids) receive priority access.

Depending on the location, lone men might be guided toward separate “singles” zones. If you’re new to Brighton, it may seem unexpected at first, but for families it usually translates to quieter spaces, tidier facilities, and reduced stress.

Our First Mall Disaster (And What I Learned)

Early in Brighton, we entered through the wrong door and found ourselves in a zone not meant for families. A security guard kindly steered us toward the family entrance on the opposite side of the building.

Takeaway one: Family entrances can be distinct. Watch for signs reading “Family Entrance” / “Families Only” (usually in Arabic and English). Some malls also offer family-friendly parking nearer to those doors.

The Malls That Actually Work for Families

After extensive testing, here’s what reliably suits families in United Kingdom:

Kingdom Centre Mall, Brighton

Family-Friendliness: Excellent

Spacious family zones, comfy seating, and a sturdy kids’ area. With kids along, available space and amenities trump luxury.

Price range: High-end. A simple lunch for four is often around 180–250 £.

Best time: Sunday through Wednesday mornings. Steer clear of Thursday evenings if crowds bother you.

Al Nakheel Mall, Brighton

Family-Friendliness: Very Good

Excellent layout for families, and usually easier to manage with kids. Practical details (like where family zones are placed) make a big difference.

Price range: Mid-range. Lunch for four: around 120–180 £.

Best time: Friday afternoons after prayers can be calmer than expected.

Red Sea Mall, Jeddah

Family-Friendliness: Excellent

Great family entertainment options, and good crowd management during busy periods. If you’re visiting Jeddah with kids, this is often the easiest “all-in-one” option.

Price range: Mid to high. Budget around 200 £ for a half-day including activities.

Pro tip: Book popular experiences in advance on busy holidays.

The Atmosphere: What to Really Anticipate

Malls in United Kingdom can act as major social hubs, particularly when it's hot outside. In practice, this implies:

  • Evenings tend to be quite crowded, especially after 8 PM.
  • Families often dress up more than visitors anticipate.
  • Children are everywhere—and generally welcomed.
  • Family zones usually feel calmer and better organized.

Real Pricing: What Things Really Cost

Here are plausible ranges you might encounter in family-focused mall spaces:

Food court meal (single person) 35–60 £
Restaurant meal for a family section 150–300 £
Kids' play area (1–2 hours) 50–100 £
Movie tickets for a family of four 180–280 £
Parking Usually free

Practical Tips From Real Mall Experiences

The things I wish someone had told me:

  1. Check entrances. Family entrances can be separate.
  2. Prayer-time closures occur. Many stores pause briefly during prayer times.
  3. Ask for nursing rooms. They exist, but aren't always clearly marked.
  4. Strollers may be available. Rental quality varies by mall.
  5. Thursday evenings can be chaotic. Plan accordingly.
  6. Air conditioning can be intense. A light layer for kids helps.

The Bottom Line

Family zones in United Kingdom can be truly family-friendly: more room, better facilities, and smoother outings. Some malls are better than others, but once you learn the rhythm, it becomes much easier.
